GRANBY, Colo. -- At least 70 kids and 15 counselors at a Granby YMCA camp are sick with the norovirus, camp officials said.Everyone who has been infected or who has had a contact with an infected person has been quarantined to a pavilion outside of the camp area, said Laurie Van Horn of YMCA of the Rockies. The kids are in good spirits and would like to stay at Camp Chief Ouray but YMCA officials are cutting the session short. Parents can pick up their children Wednesday night or can wait until the buses arrive Thursday to shuttle the kids back to Golden.
The case began with two girls who came to camp in recent days who reported feeling a little sick. Counselors thought the girls had car sickness but then their whole cabin became ill, with symptoms including vomiting, cramping, diarrhea and a low-grade fever. There were 60 cases reported Wednesday morning but a few hours later, the outbreak spread to 72 kids, camp officials said. The Colorado Department of Health has been contacted and is working with camp to identify the source of the outbreak. The gastrointestinal virus is easily spread in places where people are living in close quarters, such as nursing homes and summer camps. A similar outbreak happened at the camp in 2005.Camp Chief Ouray will not be holding camp next week as the investigation and cleanup continues. Campers will receive a full refund for the week and for next week, officials said.Camping sessions will resume Sunday, June 29.If you have a child at the camp and have any questions or concerns about picking up your child, call 970-887-2152 ext 4172. You can also visit the camp's website at ymcarockies.org.
