With temperatures heating up, more people will take advantage of the nice weather and soak up some sun. Along with the fun comes a warning from some dermatologists about protecting yourself from skin cancer, especially for pregnant women.

Neta Hermoni knows that all too well. She was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, the second-most common form of skin cancer, while she was pregnant. The cancer looked more like a blemish on her left cheek in the beginning.

"After two weeks it started to hurt me when I talk, when I smile, when I move my mouth," said Hermoni.

"In the case of pregnancy, you don't want to wait. You need to see if this is something you need to deal with now," said Dr. Joel Cohen with About Skin Dermatology.

In Hermoni's case, she needed to have surgery right away. The thought didn't sit well with the mom-to-be at first, but she knew it was a priority. Cohen used Moh's Micrographic surgery to remove Hermoni's tumor.

"A delay in treatment of a few months with melanoma or squamous cell can have very significant implications that may be life threatening," said Cohen.

The surgery was a success. Hermoni even went back for laser surgery to minimize the scarring. She was pleased with the result. The experience also changed how she dresses under the sun.

"I'm going all the time with long sleeves -- even in the summer. No more short sleeve," said Hermoni.
