DENVER -- As the fight against cancer continues, the good news is according to researchers at the University of Colorado Cancer Center, we're seeing a drop in the number of cancer related deaths in the United States each year, since 2003. That means, for the first time ever, fewer people are dying of cancer now than last year. That trend is expected to continue in the future.Doctors at UCCC said the reason is we're now tackling cancer on mulitple fronts. Cancer prevention, early detection, and cancer treatment combined helped make the difference, including in children diagnosed with cancer."Many of the most common children's cancers have gone from being pretty uniformly fatal to as far as we can tell completely cured," said Dr. Andrew Thornburn of UCCC.
Also, Dr. Thornburn said most testicular cancer patients are completely cured. Desipte the progress, doctors say we still have a ways to go.Right now, researchers are focusing on new treatments that fight the specific defects that cause the tumor. This is compared to the traditional treatment that might have been more toxic to patients
