DENVER -- Moving is probably not your favorite summer task. But there is some good news. Sustainability programs are now reducing waste and saving customers money. It's a trend that U-Haul representatives say has been gaining popularity throughout the past three years.
The biggest push has been to encourage customers to reuse moving boxes multiple times before sending them to the recycling center. These "green" boxes are labeled with tips to help movers reuse them easily and properly mark the boxes for easy identification."We want to reduce the amount of waste in landfills. That's what many of our products are based on," said Justin Frank, the U-Haul marketing company president with Northern Colorado.Inside Colorado U-Haul retail stores, customers can find everything from the green boxes to recycled denim blankets and packing peanuts made from edible corn starch.Customers are instrumental in the success of a box sharing program. Free exchanges can be arranged online or in the stores."At every U-Haul there is a take-a-box, leave-a-box bin. Customers are encouraged to use it. We'll take any type of box. From a shipping box to a banana box, all are appreciated," said Frank. And in the U-haul parking lot, the familiar truck fleet is getting a green face lift.New trucks contain a fuel gauge designed to save customers money."It tells you what is the best place to drive as far as speed and efficiency on the road," said Frank. And, there's more green on the way. A U Car Share program is coming to Colorado in the next two years. For more moving tips and to learn more about U-Haul's sustainability program, visit UHaul.com.
