Organic Food Delivery Service Beating Recession

Owner: The More People Eat At Home, The More We Benefit

Who would have thought that an organic food home delivery service would benefit from the recession?

The president and COO (Chief Organic Officer) of Louisville-based Door to Door Organics says even in difficult economic times, it's important for people to eat well.

Chad Arnold said the 4-year-old company employs about 20 people and delivers organic fruits and vegetables to customers up and down the Front Range from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs and into the mountains.

Michael Morlitz is one of their customers.

"My wife and I have such busy schedules. We both work in advertising. We don't have time to go to the supermarket every week, and it's great to have things delivered to us," Morlitz said.

Most of the food comes from organic farms such as Full Circle Farms in Longmont.

"Organic is growing without any synthetic chemicals, like herbicides or pesticides," said Door to Door Organics founder David Gersenson.

Gersenson said that as the economy tightens up, more people eat at home and that helps his business.

"People aren't going to sacrifice their organic fruits and vegetables to go back to conventional because organic is a lifestyle," he said.

A 12-item box containing two Fuji apples, two Valencia oranges, carrots with tops, local spinach, Romaine lettuce, arugula, two peaches and leeks costs $22.

A 37-item box containing eight apples, two lemons, two mangos, eight oranges, one pound of asparagus, carrots, kale, local spinach, lettuce, arugula, eight peaches, leeks and local grilling onions costs $56.

"I love the convenience," said customer Tamsin Nathan, who signed up for the service five months ago.

She gets the box with fruits and vegetables delivered to her office.

"I probably end up buying more organic produce than I would otherwise," Nathan told 7NEWS. "But that makes me feel good about providing the right kind of healthy food to my family."

The organic goodies can be ordered online at Door to Door Organics Web site.

The price of the food includes delivery between Fort Collins and Colorado Springs. There is an additional fee beyond the regular service area.

In order to keep costs down, the company has implemented a specific day of delivery for each region.
