HERSHEY, Pa. -- Hershey's Food Corp. hopes to tap into the growing number of consumers who have adopted low-carbohydrate diets with a new product, Hershey's One Gram Sugar Carb bars.
"We are excited to introduce a product that not only fits this lifestyle, but gives consumers a new snack choice that delivers the great chocolate taste for which Hershey is famous," said Thomas Hernquist, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Hershey Foods in a press release.
The new bar will include three flavors, chocolate candy, chocolate candy with almonds and chocolate candy with soy crisps.
The chocolate-flavored bars are made from sugar alcohol and fiber instead of traditional sweeteners, so they contain only one gram of sugar per 1.1 ounce bar.
They also boast 20 percent fewer calories than the company's conventional milk-chocolate bar. Hershey said its One Gram Sugar Carb bars have minimal impact on blood sugar levels.
The new low-carb bars will be shipped starting early next year and will sell for $1.19 - $1.49.
