The best overall space heater was the Vornado Digital Vortex-Heat ED1-0028-66 ($100; 800-234-0604; www.vornado.com). This model warmed rooms better and faster than others tested. Plus, the digital thermostat and clear control panel made the Vornado extremely user-friendly.

The Holmes Ultra Quiet Ceramic Mini Tower Heater HCH4952 ($39.99; 800-284-3267; www.holmesproducts.com/estore) was the "best value" among the Institute's top picks. It oscillates back and forth to distribute heat and has a remote control and a timer so you can set it to turn on just before you wake up in the morning.

Safety tip: Unless a heater is specifically designed for the bathroom or outdoors, never use it around water. It could pose a shock hazard.
