Family Friday: Glenwood Caverns

Pack up the family, get in the car, and join us for another Family Friday trip.

This gondola takes visitors up to the Glenwood Caverns.

This time it's to Glenwood Springs. Sure, it's is a long way for a day-trip but if you're willing to spend the night and a few dollars you can hit the hot springs pool then go up the gondola on Iron Mountain to Glenwood Caverns.

The gondola itself has become a popular attraction since it went into service two years ago.

It's a quick 10 minute ride up to the top, about 1,300 feet vertical climb.

The lift made the spectacular caverns more accessible to more people. It's amazing once you go inside to see what hundreds of thousands of years and an ice age can produce.

But this year the scenery isn't the only draw, there's Doc's Rock, named after gunslinger Doc Holliday.

If you really want to try living on the edge, you might try the Swing Shot. It'll carry you 50 feet out over the canyon. The river is 1,300 feet down.

What a view!

The Alpine Rush and the Zip Line are other attractions added this summer.

On the Zip Line, a cable system pulls you 650 feet uphill. Once you're on the zip line, you'll be doing speeds upwards of 50 miles an hour. A combination of springs and shock absorbers are all that stop him from going into the next county.

They're still working on the Canyon Flyer a 3,400 foot sort-of-roller-coaster, the first of its kind in the United States. Like an alpine slide you start at the top and let gravity carry you downhill on some very solid rails. It may be ready by Memorial Day weekend.

There are package prices for the gondola and cave tour. It's $18 for adults, $13 for kids or you can just take the lift up and back for less.

For the Canyon Flyer coaster, the Alpine Rush Zip Line and the Swing Shot tickets are per ride and start at $7 apiece. The more you buy, though, the cheaper they get.

And there's a very good restaurant at the top of the lift so you can't bring food or drinks in with you.

For more information, go to Glenwood Caverns.com or call (970) 945-4228.

Don't forget to bring a jacket because it's cool inside the caves and sometimes very windy outside.
