AURORA, Colo. -- From preschool kids to adults, everyone will love a place called the Morrison Nature Center. It's not in Morrison and it's a little hard to find but it's well worth a look. The Morrison Nature Center is in the middle of a 5-mile stretch of the Sand Creek Greenway in Aurora, and there's an awful lot to see there, Consumer Champ Bill Clarke said. Don't blink or you might miss the turn through an industrial neighborhood to the Star K Ranch and the Morrison Nature Center.
With a ranger on hand, there is less show-and-tell at the center and more show-and-touch. You can touch everything from coyote fur to a real live (but harmless) snake."A lot of people don't know this but deer live all over the city," said a ranger, talking to visitors. It's useful information to have when those visitors step outside to explore the center's 200 acres."Oooh, here's a good deer track. Oooh, right there," said one young visitor, pointing to tracks on the ground. In addition to the organized guided programs for all age groups, you can also take it in all on your own.The center offers an exploring backpack that could be your key. It has a pair of binoculars, four guidebooks, and magnifying boxes and jars so you can check out the insects that you pick up out there. And there's no rental fee. There's a long list of guided programs at the Morrison Nature Center. Some are free and others carry a nominal charge. The Nature Center is off Smith Road and Laredo. Call (303) 739-2428 or go to Auroragov.org for more information.
