Quick Fixes For Everyday Household Problems

Why hire professionals to take care of small home repairs? For all you do-it-yourselfers, the Good Housekeeping Institute tested three products that keep home maintenance simple:

For exposed floors, try Orange Glo Hardwood Floor Refinisher ($14.99; 800-781-7529; www.orangeglowood.com). It restores shine to dull, worn polyurethane-finished floors and works especially well on scratches. Remember: The best way to prevent scratching is to vacuum often.

If pets have wreaked havoc on your favorite chair, check out Tear Mender Fabric and Leather Adhesive ($4.99; 773-927-9442; www.tearmender.com). The latex liquid seals cut edges to prevent further tearing. To keep leather upholstery from drying out, keep the furniture out of direct sunlight.

Repair chipped or stained spots between kitchen or bathroom tiles with TrafficMaster's Stainproof Grout Kit ($19.98; 800-397-8118; www.trafficmasterstainproofgrout.com). It's the first product the GH Institute found that sticks to existing grout, and the Scotchgard helps the new layer stay clean.
