Plants For Flagstone Paths

-Phil Steinhauer, CEO of Colorado Designscapes Inc.

You may have heard of these plants that you can step on referred to as "stepable plants". They are perennials that you can plant, step on them and they won't die. They are plants that tolerate foot traffic.

Benefits of planting stepable plants:
  • Varieties for both sun and shade areas
  • Alternative to planting sod
  • Planted around trees and shrubs reduce mulch areas
  • Great addition to your annual containers or retaining walls for "spillers"
  • Aesthetic appeal
  • Feel nice on your feet
  • Low maintenance required

Some varieties that are commonly planted here, have good availability and success:
  • Thyme (Many Varieties)
  • Ajuga
  • Rockcress
  • Mat Daisy
  • Fleabane
  • Snow-in-Summer
  • Creeping Baby's Breath
  • Moneywort
  • Veronica (Many Varieties)
  • Irish Moss
  • Scott Moss
  • Creeping Cinquefoil
  • Sedum (Many Varieties)

Plants in 2 1/4 inch pots work best for planting in between stones.

While it is important to compact the dirt under the stones, the dirt surrounding them should be loose.
