Have you ever thought about cutting your own Christmas tree?

cutting Christmas tree from national forest

There will just be 7,000 permits given to cut down trees in the South Platte Ranger District and the Pike and Isabel national forests. This covers 10,000 acres near Buffalo Creek in Jefferson County.

The cost to find and cut your own perfect tree is just $10 but permits typically run out fast because the Rocky Mountains have traditionally drawn tree-hunters from as far away as Kansas.

You can get a permit in person or by mail. You can go to the U.S. Forest Service's Morrison district office, which is off of Highway 285, about 6.5 miles southwest of C-470.

You can also call (303) 275-5610 for more information. To purchase the permit by mail, go to the Forest Service's Web site and download a purchase form.

Permits will go on sale for the Colorado Springs area on Dec. 1. The Colorado Springs areas are east and north of Woodland Park along Rampart Range Road. There is no limit to the number of permits that will be sold for these areas.
