Rubber Gloves, You're My Friend
Craft Instructions Provided By Jane Asper
... sung to the tune of "Rubber Ducky, You're My Friend." You know you should wear them, every time you wash dishes or do other chores involving water or chemicals. But it's all too easy to forget, especially when the gloves are under the sink, hiding behind who knows what! Spiff up your gloves and keep them on display where you will be sure to see them, and then, maybe you'll use them more often.
Rubber gloves come in a myriad of colors, so it is easy to find a shade that will be a standout in your kitchen. Some come with ridged "fingernails." If yours are like this, don't polish the nails, as in the directions below. Use a thick Sharpie pen to "tattoo" the top of the hand, if you like. Draw a bar of soap in a heart shaped border, or some other appropriate design. The Sharpie pens are waterproof, so you design will stay permanently on your gloves. If the tattoo look isn't you, use the pens to make a pattern of simple polka dots all over the top of the hands in colors that go with your trims.
These make a great wedding shower gift!
What You Need
2. Cut pieces of wide wired or gathered ribbon about 3 times the length of the glove cuff. Gather or pleat the trim and staple it
on in a few places about 1' below the edge of the cuff. This acts as basting.
3. Pull a silk flower off of the stem. Cut a 6" piece of thin wire and run it through the center of the flower and then back out of the flower's back. Poke the wire ends through the ribbon and the rubber glove about 1" apart and twist ends together. Cut end and twist ends of wire to the inside.
4. Cut another piece of wire about 18" long and use this to sew the gathered ribbon firmly into place on the glove. Make small stitches on the outside so the sewing will be invisible. Yes, you can do this on the sewing machine, but it is tricky to sew the rubber and in general, getting out the machine and using it for this project is way more trouble than it is worth.
5. Finish with the ends of the wire on the outside of the glove, cut the ends short, twist together and tuck into the edge of the ribbon.
6. If desired, sew a loop of narrow trim at the top of both gloves to use to hang them up on a hook.
