DENVER -- Scooter is one lucky pooch. The 17-pound, 7-year-old Lhasa apso terrier mix survived a jump out of the back of her owner's truck bed while headed west on Interstate 70 near Silverthorne last month.Scooter's owner, Bob Wallace, was driving his son to school when a woman honked her horn and pointed to his truck bed, alerting him of Scooter's absence.
Wallace told the Summit Daily News, “I'm glad I didn't see it happen … I kept expecting to see a bloody ball of fur.”Wallace and his son Nick began a frantic search for the pup along the interstate.“I got to sit in the truck for what seemed like hours," Nick told the News. "I remember thinking ‘my dad's MIA, my dog is probably dead, and I'm two-and-a-half miles from a phone.' ”Finally, a friendly driver noticed Wallace searching the roads, pulled over and asked if he was looking for a dog. The man told Wallace that he had spotted the small dog crossing the interstate and took her to Buffalo Mountain Animal Shelter in Silverthorne.“He was a real nice guy to do what he did,” Wallace told the News.Dr. Mark Cowan of Buffalo Mountain saw Scooter when she first arrived. He said he has treated animals for jumps before, but never at the high speeds of an interstate. He told the News “part of her luck was she was a small dog. She really just had abrasions, no real traumatic wounds.”Now fully recovered Scooter is back to her carefree puppy self. However, she won't be taking a ride in the back of a truck anytime soon.Although there are no restrictions on pets riding in truck beds, Wallace said he won't be letting Scooter ride in the back of the truck after this lucky ordeal.
