Once a month, a group of ladies from Lowry get together for tea. It's a chance to catch up and meet new neighbors.

"After a couple of years, we decided that we needed a focus and a purpose, other than meeting once a month to catch up on birthdays and grandkids," said Lyn Schaffer.

That's how the Fairy Godmothers were born.

"I came up with the idea that the group adopts the Kempe preschoolers," said Schaffer.

The Kempe Foundation is an organization that focuses on prevention and treatment of child abuse. Its preschool helps child abuse victims learn to trust again with counciling and a variety of support programs.

So every month, members of the Fairy Godmothers would take that $5 they each would use to buy food for the meetings, and donate it for the kids at Kempe Therapeutic Preschool. The money has helped buy toys, clothes, books, and even field trips for the students.

"The one that I always quote is about a little boy with his new shoes. He said no one else has been in these shoes and that hit home with me," said Schaffer.

"By our contributions they get to do those kinds of things. Wow, that's really special," said another member of the Fairy Godmothers group who did not want to be identified.

This member also said their efforts are teaching child abuse suvivors about giving back too. She said when she was ill, each student from the Kempe Therapeutic Preschool made a card for her, yet they've never even met her.
