DENVER -- Life for many 7- and 8-year-olds can certainly be full of fun. There can also be some stress.Bullying, test anxiety and peer conflicts are just a few stressful situations pre-teens often face. Two Colorado moms have written a book and created a program that may help kids deal with these situations and maybe even tap into what they call the "inner glow."
Candice Bataille Popiel and Jennifer Jazwierska are co-authors of "Discovery of Glow." It is the first book in the Glowmundo Series.Through the travels of Lumina Osity, a budding fifth-grade scientist, readers learn about tapping into their inner glow."We've taken the art of thinking patterns and we have kind of woven it into a story in which Lumina Osity can experience certain things to amplify her glow and make it bigger," said Jazwierska.Throughout the book, Lumina realizes that she can feel good about herself even if things are going wrong. In one scene, she goes to school with two different colored socks. It was embarrassing, but thinking about happy thoughts brought her glow and changed her outlook."We are teaching mind, body awareness connection along with entertainment," said Popiel. The book is being read by children across the Denver metro area."I think personally that the message is to never think about what you can't do, but always think about what you can do to help the world, friends and people," said fifth-grader Paula Petit-Molina.Up next for the authors is classroom workshops and an interactive web site designed to further help children manage difficult situations."It's our hope that they have all these tools that are very easy to use, in their pockets and accessible in any moment," said Jazwierska. For more information on "Discover of Glow" and the Glowundo series, visit their Web site.
