FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- A very special pup is finally walking on four legs thanks to some generous souls.Sally, a one-year-old Saluki, was discovered hobbling in the Kuwaiti desert by a military contractor earlier this year. A veterinarian in Kuwait wanted to amputate her leg at the hip joint, but when Dr. Erick Egger of Colorado State University's veterinary school heard about Sally, he argued that she would be a perfect candidate for an experimental prosthetic. If it works, Sally would be helping other dogs.
Sally was brought to the United States and adopted by Egger. The prosthetic that was fitted for her on Thursday is temporary and will allow her body to build up bone and muscle before she gets her permanent device. It also allows doctors to make sure that the final one fits perfectly, and that Sally will be comfortable with her new limb. When she does get a permanent prosthetic leg in a month or so, it will be attached to her bone with screws.
