SAN FRANCISCO - YouTube has reached a major milestone hitting more than 1 billion monthly users per month.
The video-based website launched back in 2005.
Google bought YouTube for $1.76 billion in 2006 when the video site had an estimated 50 million users worldwide.
Google credits YouTube’s growth to the use of smartphones. They also said that nearly one out of every two people on the Internet visits YouTube.
YouTube crossed the 1 billion threshold five months after Facebook Inc. said its online social network had reached that figure for the first time.
For context, Twitter has only 200 million active monthly users, according to the Business Insider.
