DENVER – Two Coloradans are among the nominees for the 90th Academy Awards this year.

Boulder native Vanessa Taylor is nominated alongside Guillermo del Toro in the Original Screenplay category for the Cold War-era fairytale “The Shape of Water,” which tells the story of a janitor who works in a classified government laboratory that tests new technology to help defeat the Soviet Union in 1962.

Jezebel reports Taylor’s career began in TV, writing for shows like Alias, Everwood and – get this – Game of Thrones.

She has since made her way to film writing and has penned screenplays for Hope Springs, starring Meryl Streep and has collaborated with other writers for Divergent and the new live action movie for Aladdin.

This will be Taylor’s first Academy Award nomination.

Closer to home, Denver native Bryan Fogel has been nominated in the Best Documentary Feature category for “Icarus,” which documents an amateur bicyclist’s attempts at beating anti-doping tests to prove they can be rigged. As Fogel attempts to beat the tests, he becomes close with Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov, uncovering a bigger scandal in the process.

This will be Fogel’s first Academy Award nomination alongside Dan Cogan.

The 90th annual Academy Awards will air on Denver7 starting at 6 p.m. MST. Jimmy Kimmel will return to host the Oscars for a second year in a row.
