After 227 days at sea, the lifeboat reaches the coast of Mexico. Richard Parker stops at the edge of the jungle. Pi expects that the tiger will turn toward him and acknowledge him, but instead, he looks into the jungle for a while and goes in.

Pi is rescued, and at the hospital, insurance agents for the freighter come to hear his account. They don't believe the story, so he makes up another, parallel tale about being on the lifeboat with a wounded cook and his mother.

At the end, the tale's author asks the audience to pick the story they prefer. A copy of the insurance report shows the agents chose Pi's original, fantastical tale.
