A signed copy of the BEATLES' SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND album has stunned auction experts in Texas after pre-sale bids sailed past the estimate with a week to go before the lot goes under the hammer.
The album, autographed by all four Beatles, will officially hit the auction block at Heritage Auctions in Dallas on 30 March (13), but it has already surpassed expectations.
Experts anticipated the copy to sell for $30,000 , but early bidding has pushed the price past $110,000 - and now auction house bosses are hoping the album will sell for more than $150,000 .
The auction company's consignment director Gary Shrum tells Rolling Stone magazine the bidding has "taken on a life of its own".
It's not the only in-demand Beatles item on the auction block - a custom-built VOX guitar played by both George Harrison and John Lennon is to go under the hammer at a Julien's Auctions sale in New York on 18 May (13). The instrument is expected to fetch up to $300,000 .
