Actor Larry Hagman, famous for roles in 'Dallas,' 'I Dream of Jeannie,' dies at Dallas hospital

DALLAS - Larry Hagman, the actor who played  J.R. Ewing on the long-running TV show Dallas, died Friday at a Dallas hospital, the Dallas Morning News reported Friday night.

Hagman died Friday afternoon at Medical City Dallas Hospital from complications of his recent battle with cancer, members of his family told the newspaper.

"Larry was back in his beloved Dallas, re-enacting the iconic role he loved most," the family said in a statement.  "Larry’s family and close friends had joined him in Dallas for the Thanksgiving holiday. When he passed, he was surrounded by loved ones. It was a peaceful passing, just as he had wished for. The family requests privacy at this time."

Hagman lived California with his wife of nearly 60 years, the former Maj Axelsson.  

He was in Dallas to film season one of TNT’s new Dallas series and part of season two, the Morning News reportsed.

 

Linda Gray, his on-screen wife and later ex-wife in the original series and the sequel, says Hagman "brought joy to everyone he knew."
 
Victoria Principal, who co-starred in the original series, recalled Hagman as "bigger than life." She calls Hagman "unforgettable, and irreplaceable."
 
Jeannie star Barbara Eden says Hagman was "an element of pure Americana."
 

Hagman was 81.
