GARY, Ind. - Actor Ed Asner was taken away by ambulance after falling ill during a performance in northern Indiana on Tuesday night, witnesses said.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the 83-year-old cut short his performance in the one-man show "FDR" at Marquette Pavilion in Gary after having difficulty speaking.

The show, in which Asner portrays Franklin Delano Roosevelt, began 45 minutes late, and Asner was visibly confused and frustrated, leaving the stage after only 15 minutes, members of the sold-out crowd told the newspaper.

Asner's condition was not released Wednesday morning. Audience members said Asner apologized and promised to return when he could.
