What if Mr. Darcy offered Miss Elizabeth Bennett a proposition rather than a proposal?

In "Slightly Dangerous," one of the best recent riffs on Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," staid and exacting Wulfric Bedwyn, Duke of Bewcastle, graciously condescends to invite the vivacious widow Mrs. Christine Derrick to become not his bride but his mistress.

Christine is quietly outraged and the duke is incredulous at her refusal. But he can't shake his attraction to the perfectly unsuitable woman as he rescues her from herself on several occasions. Might Christine do the same for Wulfric?

Balogh is a fine writer whose well-mannered love stories are entertaining, deceptively passionate and always thoroughly satisfying.
