Site Chronicles Worst Jobs In History

POSTED: 6:43 am MDT April 26, 2005

If you hate your job or feel as if it's the lousiest job in the world, you might want to check out a Web site that outlines some of the worst jobs in history.

The site, hosted by United Kingdom broadcaster Channel 4, can be seen both as a humor site and a history lesson. It definitely provides a perspective for those who may feel in the pits about their profession.

Hate your job as a janitor? It's better than being a 17th century plague burier. You have to collect corpses from the homes, sling them over your shoulders to carry them to the pit, and work only at night. Plus, the chances of catching an infection are extremely high.

Another bad job is being a medieval fuller, where you walk up and down all day in huge vats of stinking stale urine. The ammonia produced by the rotten wee may make your eyes water, but it creates the softest cloth by drawing out the grease, or lanolin, from the wool, which is later then sold for export.

There are numerous other bad jobs, like being a leech collector for medical practitioners, or a toad eater so you can test "curing" potions for traveling quack doctors.

The site doesn't skimp on details, and after reading about each horrific career, you can assure yourself that yeah, it can be a lot worse. (Site not recommended for the squeamish but definitely for those teens who whine about how "rough" they have it now.)
