A Seattle-area man who spun a humorous tale about how he ended up with his wife's wedding dress after the divorce wasn't exactly telling the truth when he pitched the dress on eBay.Larry Star's eBay auction page received more than 11 million hits and the dress ended up selling for $3,9850."This thing has taken more hits than that pothead that lives in the next building," Star wrote about his eBay listing.
Part of the appeal of the sales pitch was the story about his divorce and the comments he made about his ex-wife and how he thanked God they didn't have children.Star, 42, admitted Thursday that much of the eBay sales pitch was fiction and he's been married twice. He also has a son, born the year he and his last wife were married in 2002.The Seattle Times reported that Star was charged with domestic-violence assault in the fourth degree a year later, and with interfering with the reporting of domestic violence. The case was deferred on the condition that Star pay $150 and abide by a no-contact order, according to the Times. It was formally dismissed in June 2003.Star and his wife were divorced in Snohomish County last December. He also doesn't have a sister, as he claimed in his ad.Since his ad became such a hit, his popularity has soared and he's even opened up his own Web site called www.weddingdressguy.com.After his eBay listing took off, he was interviewed by Seattle-area television stations and newspapers and then the national media came knocking. He's scheduled to to the 'Today' Show on NBC May 10 and says he's waiting for Letterman and Leno to call. He's heard from almost everyone it seems, except for his ex wife who still lives in the Seattle area.
