The National Enquirer is sparking outrage after publishing a photo purported to be Whitney Houston in an open casket.

The disturbing photo, on Wednesday's cover, was reportedly taken at the Whigham Funeral Home in New Jersey. It's unclear how the Enquirer obtained the still-unverified shot, CBS News reported.

It shows Houston lying in a golden coffin, wearing a purple dress, and is accompanied by the headline, "WHITNEY: THE LAST PHOTO!"

The photo is followed by other headlines promising to take readers inside her private viewing, plus claims that she was buried in $500,000 worth of jewelry, was wearing her favorite purple dress and was laid to rest with gold slippers on her feet, the LA Times reported.

Facebook and Twitter users lashed out at the tabloid, calling the move trashy and shameful.

The death photo is not without precedent. The National Enquirer famously ran a photo of Elvis in his coffin in 1977.

Houston, 48, died in a Beverly Hills hotel room earlier this month. She was found submerged in a bathtub just hours before she was scheduled to attend a pre-Grammys soiree hosted by her longtime mentor, Clive Davis.
