All Agree They're Tired Of Simpson Saga

Americans are divided over O.J. Simpson's armed robbery case, and the split appears to be along racial lines, according to a new AP/Ipsos Poll.

Seventy percent of whites said they believed the charges against Simpson are true. Among blacks, 10 percent believe the charges.

Among blacks, those in the survey tilted slightly toward believing Simpson is guilty, by 41 percent to 37 percent.

Seventy percent of whites and 10 percent of blacks said Simpson was treated fairly by Las Vegas authorities.

Simpson faces felony charges including first-degree kidnapping, robbery with use of a deadly weapon, burglary while in possession of a deadly weapon, and coercion with use of a deadly weapon. He also faces a number of lesser charges.

When asked about the 1994 double-murder case involving Simpson, his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman, 74 percent of whites said they thought Simpson was guilty of the killings. Thirty-one percent of blacks said they thought Simpson was guilty.

The poll also found that 85 percent of blacks said they believe they and other minorities do not get the same treatment as whites in the criminal justice system. About half of whites believe they and minorities do not get the same treatment as whites in the criminal justice system.

It also appears that Americans are tired of the saga. Almost nine in 10 blacks and whites each say they're tired of hearing about Simpson.

The telephone survey taken Sept. 21-25 of 1,317 adults -- 865 whites, 368 blacks -- has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
