A former member of the "Family Ties" cast is expected to be formally charged next week in a domestic violence case in Boulder.

The Daily Camera newspaper reported that 25-year-old Brian Bonsall allegedly poured an alcoholic drink on his girlfriend's face while she was sleeping, then threw her on the bed and put her in a choke hold as she attempted to leave.

Bonsall told police that the woman approached him with a steak knife and cut his face and arm. He claimed that he threw her down in self defense.

Charges are expected to be filed against Bonsall on Tuesday.

Bonsall is perhaps best known for playing the role of Andy Keaton on "Family Ties" from 1986 to 1989. He played Michael J. Fox's younger brother. Bonsall later appeared in episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Father Hood."

In June 2004, Bonsall was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. Police at the time said they saw someone vomit out the passenger side window of Bonsall's car. Asked how much he had to drink, Bonsall responded, "Plenty," then failed a roadside test, police said.

Bonsall was convicted of drunken driving in 2001 and his license was suspended.
