Professor Wrestling: 'New Year's Revolution' Results

Umaga, Cena Battle For WWE Title

POSTED: 9:42 pm MST January 4, 2007

Listen up!

Class is in session.

Hope everyone had a great holiday season, but now it's back to business. As for where I was last week (there was no column, thanks for noticing), let's just say it involved a helicopter, Costa Rica and a lot of new masks. I will say no more.

As for the task at hand, it's time to see what happened on the latest WWE pay-per-view extravaganza "New Year's Revolution." Read on!

Challenge Match: Kenny Dykstra vs. Ric Flair
What Should Happen: It's the new kid versus the old lion. Poor Flair, he deserves much more than this. But I'm already past the point of feeling sorry for him. If he beats Dykstra, what good does that do? Does he get a title match next? Nope. Never. He's in the role of teacher and that's it. Sadly, Flair loses here. I'm betting Dykstra will be a better wrestler when the master gets done with him, though.

What Will Happen: Dykstra, a Spirit Squad graduate, gets a win over the greatest performer to ever enter the ring. Yikes.

What Did Happen:Dykstra pinned The Nature Boy cleanly. Has the world stopped spinning?

WWE Women's Title Match: Mickie James (c) vs. Victoria
What Should Happen: There has to be some way to get Nancy Pelosi to get in the ring with these two for a three-way bout. That would make it interesting – and timely!

What Will Happen: Victoria will win because there's only two women who can pretend to wrestle in this company, and the other one is Mickie James. If James wins, that kills this program. If Victoria wins, they can have a series of rematches. Yes, I know. I am a genius.

What Did Happen: Melina tried to interfere on Victoria's behalf, but it didn't work out, as James retained. This match could have used a dose of Pelos'.

Challenge Match: Carlito vs. Chris Masters
What Should Happen: There has to be some way to get Nancy Pelosi to get in the ring with these two for a three-way bout. Oh, I already said that. But, hey, that would make this one interesting as well! I liked Masters better when he was on steroids. I liked Carlito better when he was a heel. Can we turn back the clock on these two? OK, here's what should happen: Carlito should break the Master Lock. Hey, just think of the pay-per-view replay buys!

What Will Happen: Masters will win a long, bloody affair.

What Did Happen: Masters won a relatively short match, grabbing Carlito's tights for the pin. Carlito suplexed out of the Master Lock, but I guess it didn't count as an official "breaking of."

Intercontinental Title Match: Jeff Hardy (c) vs. Johnny Nitro
What Should Happen: This is a cage match, and Nitro should lose for merely associating with Kevin Federline these past few weeks. That being said, this one could actually steal the show, kids. Both performers are fairly good workers and the cage should add a new dimension that could be pretty fun to watch. I'm giving this one a preliminary thumbs up.

What Will Happen: I'm going to go with Nitro here. You might see some interference from his MNM partner, Joey Mercury.

What Did Happen: Melina tried to interfere, but Hardy got out the cage first. It was a close one. As Nitro was coming down, he got caught on the door Hardy opened to escape.

World Tag Team Championship Match: Edge and Randy Orton (c) vs. Triple H and Shawn Michaels
What Should Happen: I'd like to think that team Rated RKO will have a shot to win, but it's rare when the future owner of the company (HHH) loses PPV matches. If I were booking things, I'd take this opportunity to add another heel to the RKO mix. Where is Brock Lesnar these days?

What Will Happen: Don't kid yourselves. DX will not be pinned. I'm guessing this will be total chaos, with a double-DQ and the titles staying with Rated RKO.

What Did Happen: Yikes. This was a mess, as Hunter suffered a legit leg injury (possible quad tear). Rated RKO kept the titles via DQ.

WWE Title Match: John Cena (c) vs. Umaga
What Should Happen: WWE has really done an admirable job building Umaga into an unstoppable monster. Remember, this guy (real name Eddie Fatu) used to wrestle with Rosey in Three Minute Warning, and was pretty bland. This Umaga thing is a nice gimmick, but should he wear the belt? Can monsters prosper with the gold? Maybe not. But on the other hand, what has Cena truly done for the belt? The jury is out on that one, which makes it monstrous food for thought.

What Will Happen: WWE doesn't have the guts to crown Umaga champ right now. Cena will win.

What Did Happen: Cena pinned Umaga cleanly to retain his belt. Gutless. What's the sense of having an unbeatable monster if he's beaten before a huge event like WrestleMania? I scratch my head.

For the record, I had four right, two wrong on this one. Another night of brilliance, if I don't say so myself. Speaking of brilliance, check out Episode 14 of our weekly podcast, "Old School, New School." Dr. Mike Lano and George Schire are back for their take on the wrestling scene past and present. This week, we chat about the finishing moves of yesteryear, reveal our WrestleMania dream matches, and give the thumbs up, thumbs down on Battle Royales. Also, in our "What Ever Happened To…" segment, Jim Brunzell and Mil Mascaras are in the spotlight. It's required listening, and you can get it RIGHT HERE!

That's it!

Now scram. Class dismissed!
