Listen up!Class is in session.Just when you thought we'd answer a few letters here, yet another pay-per-view demands our attention! This time, it's WWE "Armageddon," as the "Smackdown!" crew put on a three-hour show Sunday night. I guess there's nothing like a little Armageddon before Christmas. So what happened? That's why I'm here.
But before we get to the main course of this lecture, here's a great side dish: Episode 12 of our weekly podcast, "Old School, New School." Dr. Mike Lano and George Schire are back for their take on the wrestling scene past and present. This week, we chat about the greatest gags of all time, TNA's future, and the pairing of the Hardys. Also, in our "Where Are They Now" segment, Dick The Bruiser and Tito Santana are in the spotlight. It's required listening, and you can get it RIGHT HERE.As for "Armageddon," here's what happened:Challenge Match: The Miz vs. The Boogeyman
What Should Happen: I love the B-Man, but I can't stomach the miserable Miz. If I'm writing the script, something creepy happens to Miz.
What Will Happen: Let's Boogey! My guy will win with worms and slime, naturally.
What Did Happen: Boogeyman made quick work of the irritating amatuer.
WWE Tag Team Title Match: Paul London and Brian Kendrick (c) vs. William Regal and Dave Taylor
What Should Happen: It's old school versus new school! You have to have old-schoolers Regal and Taylor win, otherwise why bother with this match? Here, I'm rooting for the heels. May Regal and Taylor have a long reign!
What Will Happen: London and Kendrick will self-destruct over their manager, Ashley. Regal and Taylor will win.
What Did Happen: MNM and the Hardys were added to the contest, which was also changed to a ladder match. London and Kendrick won in a bloody, high-flying spectacle.
WWE Cruiserweight Title Match: Gregory Helms (c) vs. Jimmy Wang Yang
What Should Happen: Helms has held the belt for some time, and Wang is the wacky newcomer babyface. His gimmick is that he's an Asian redneck. Hyuk. I say let Helms keep the belt until Wang can prove he can compete with this roster. So far, I'm not convinced.
What Will Happen: Wang will take Helms' belt.
What Did Happen: Helms held on to beat Wang, keeping his title.
U.S. Title Match: Chris Benoit (c) vs. Chavo Guerrero
What Should Happen: These are former friends at each other's throats over the memory of Eddie Guerrero. Can we please move on? The problem is, Eddie's memory is all Chavo has these days. If he loses this title shot, what does he do? Where does he go? Benoit has been back long enough to jump up to the heavyweight title picture. Chavo may as well win since he doesn't have much to do. Maybe he can get in a new program with someone with no ties to Eddie. Maybe.
What Will Happen: My upset pick is Chavo G.
What Did Happen: Benoit beat Chavo by submission, retaining the U.S. belt.
Last Ride Match: Undertaker vs. Mr. Kennedy
What Should Happen: In this match, the first knucklehead to be stuffed into the back of a hearse and driven away – loses. I have news for you kids, this is UT's match, and he won't lose. At the same time, it's important that Kennedy – who is really good on the mic – doesn't get squashed.
What Will Happen: Taker will take it.
What Did Happen: UT drove Kennedy out of the arena, winning the match.
Inferno Match: Kane vs. Montel Vontavious Porter
What Should Happen: In this one, the ring is surrounded by fire and the first idiot to be engulfed in flames -- loses. Again, this is Kane's match, and he won't lose. If I were writing the show, MVP would be victorious because I want Kane to put the mask back on. Being "scarred" by fire would force that move. Kane has to reinvent himself again just to stay fresh. Otherwise, he gets stuck in matches against guys like MVP -- and we have to pay for it.
What Will Happen: Kane will win.
What Did Happen: MVP was lit on fire first, giving Kane the victory.
Challenge Match: Batista and John Cena vs. King Booker and Finlay
What Should Happen: This is the main event? I guess it is time to put Benoit back in the title hunt. What should happen? How about a total meltdown between "Raw" champion Cena and "Smackdown!" champion Batista to force a unification match at WrestleMania? Just dreaming. Although one belt would be nice.
What Will Happen: Logic dictates that the fans will be rewarded with a babyface victory. Batista and Cena will vanquish their fake foes.
What Did Happen: You should have bet the mortgage on this one, kids. Batista and Cena won easily.
That's it. For the record, I had four right and three wrong. That's better than .500, class, and that means I still go to the Hall of Fame. Before the bell rings, don't forget about the Professor Wrestling Podcast, "Old School, New School."
