CU: Review Of Churchill Expected To Take Longer

Regents Look Into Whether Professor Can Be Dismissed Because Of His Work

University of Colorado officials say their review of the writings of a professor who likened some September eleventh victims to a Nazi bureaucrat probably won't be finished before next Monday.

CU Professor Ward Church first came under fire for an article on the victims of Sept. 11. Now there are claims that he's lied about his heritage and plagiarized other people's works.

Interim Boulder campus Chancellor Phil DiStefano had said he hoped to complete the review of Ward Churchill by Monday. He opened the review last month to determine whether he should recommend that regents fire Churchill, a tenured professor in the ethnic studies department.

The University Board of Regents issued an apology about his essay and announced its review during an emergency meeting last month. Churchill wrote an essay after the 2001 terrorist attacks that includes a comparison of some victims to a Nazi bureaucrat.

An update on the completion of the review will be given on March 14.

The professor has said his essay argues that the World Trade Center attacks came after years of unlawful U.S. actions abroad.

The obscure essay, "Some People Push Back," became known and sparked protests in January, just weeks before a speaking engagement at Hamilton College in upstate New York, which was later canceled.

Since then, Gov. Bill Owens has called for him to be fired and several schools have canceled speeches he was scheduled to make.

In response to Hoffman's resignation, Churchill defended her and said she was pressured to leave.

"I see it as part of an agenda for a political viewpoint to assert absolute state control over the university," Churchill said.
