DENVER -- The University of Colorado Denver is alerting the campus after one of its students was diagnosed with an active case of tuberculosis this week.Health officials said the student has a very treatable form of the disease and is having a speedy recovery.UCD officials said that other students who may have had significant, prolonged indoor exposure have been notified and are being evaluated.
"It's not highly infectious like influenza. It usually spreads to the closest contacts, people who spend hours, days on end together," said Dr. Randall Reves with Denver Public Health. The dean of students for UCD sent out an e-mail saying the school has carefully evaluated the situation and have taken all precautions necessary."We are confident in the health department's findings and value their leadership in handling the issue and its remediation," Samantha Ortiz said in the e-mail, sent Tuesday. As for the student with TB, officials said the student has been isolated. Reves said the period of isolation can be as short as four or five days or it can be much longer. He said, on average, it ends up being two or three weeks before the infected individual can resume normal activities."We call that short course treatment. Six to 9 months. It doesn't sound short but compared to the old treatment of 18 - 24 months, it's very short," said Reves.Campus health officials are working with Denver Public Health to keep the TB from spreading.Reves said they don't anticipate other cases.TB is a bacterial disease spread through the air from a person with active TB in their lungs. Students on campus were asked about what they know about TB."Pretty much isolation that they're going to be in until it's over," said UCD student Paul Meehan."I'm a little concerned since I don't know about it. I feel they should have informed us," said UCD student Sara Dillon.Anyone with questions or concerns is encouraged to contact Martha Eaton, assistant director of the Student Health Center at Auraria, at 303-556-3875.
