Lafayette School Discourages 'Sex Bracelets'

Principal Says Bracelets Have Sexual Meanings

The principal of Lafayette's Agnevine Middle School has sent an e-mail to parents asking them to discourage their children from wearing colored jelly bracelets to school because of rumors the colors of the bracelets suggest how far a student is willing to go sexually.

In the e-mail to parents, principal Mike Medina said "the bracelets signify different inappropriate actions that students will do or have done."

"Due to the nature of the inappropriateness associated with these bracelets, we are asking students not to wear them," Medina said.

Boulder Valley School District spokesman Briggs Gamblin said the bracelets are not banned but discouraged.

"What they were concerned about was that it was becoming a major distraction in the school that is working very hard on its academic achievement," Gamblin said.

According to the Urban Dictionary, teens who wear the bracelets play a game called "snap," in which boys try to break the bracelets off the wrists of girls. The girl is then supposed to perform a sex act represented by the color of the bracelet ranging from a hug to oral sex.

7NEWS went to the school Friday and found plenty of students wearing them.

"People call them sex bracelets, but they're just jelly bracelets," one student told 7NEWS.

"I think it is kinda stupid because people don't even wear them for those reasons, like they just wear them for the style," another student said.

Parent Joann Ortiz called the e-mail "ridiculous."

"I think we should leave it up to the parents of these children to teach them whether this is right or this is wrong at home," Ortiz said.

Several students told 7NEWS sex has nothing to do with the bracelets.

"I wear them because they match my outfit," one student said.

Gamblin said no students will be suspended for wearing the bracelets, but some have been asked to remove them in class.
