Los Angeles District Bans Soda From Campuses
Officials Hope To Combat Health Problems
POSTED: 9:39 a.m. EDT August 28, 2002
LOS ANGELES -- For students in the Los Angeles school district, sodas will soon be history.
The LA school board voted unanimously Tuesday night to ban carbonated soft drinks on all 677 campuses. One board member says it's an effort to reverse an obesity epidemic.
A soft drink industry official complained that the issue is really "about the couch and not the can."
Carbonated drinks have already been banned at LA's elementary schools.
The new measure extends the ban to middle and high schools and will take effect in January 2004.
Officials hope the lost revenue can be made up with sales of other drinks, including juices, water, and sports drinks.
