Charter School One Step Closer To Closing
School Board Voted 4-3 To Close
The Brighton School Board voted Tuesday night to draft legal documents to move forward in closing Brighton Collegiate Charter School.Back in December, District Superintendent Rod Blunck assembled a team to execute an inquiry into the contractual and operational compliance of the charter school.Tuesday night, Board President Todd Cordrey said the school failed on three accounts: Failed to provide the safety and security of their students Failed at academic achievement Failed to garner the respect and trust of the community
Sex scandals had shaken the school. In June of 2007, former teacher Carrie McCandless pleaded guilty to sexual relations with a student. In December of 2007, Social Studies teacher Ralph Kelly was charged with sexual assault on a child.Despite these past events, some parents felt keeping the school open was the best thing for the students.“I am really sad about it because I think it is the kids that are going to fail,” said Dot Oswald, who has a granddaughter who is a Junior at the Charter School. “Where are they going to go, where are they going to go.”But some parents are pleased the district is moving forward to close the school.“It is for the kids,” said Michelle Lussier. “I don’t care about the politics; I don’t care about anything like that. Are our kids getting an education and the bottom line is they are not.”“If the motion to revoke the charter passes, the charter board will have a right to appeal the revocation to the State Board of Education or, if the District agrees, may seek facilitation by a third party,” said District spokeswoman Allison Lockwood. “Either of those choices must be made by the charter board within 30 days of the 27J decision to revoke the charter.”The Board is meeting again to finalize the closure on March 18th.
