FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Two fifth-grade boys were suspended from school for one day after scrawling a "kill list" with their names and their friends' names on it.

Zach Elementary School Principal Kim Nohava said the students wrote the note Monday. A classmate told his parents, and Nohava was notified.

"The students that were involved in the incident were very honest and came forward," Nohava said. "I think they were a little surprised by the seriousness of this."

Because both boys had no previous record or office referrals, the students were suspended for one day, Nohava said.

"I think what can be learned out of all this is that kids need to report anything that is of concern to them, and they need to understand the seriousness of writing anything negative about others," Nohava said. "The district takes these things very serious, and (students) need to be very respectful of others in anything they say or do."
