Local Children Go Back To School In Trailers

Commerce City Charter School Having Problems Building A New School

Community Leadership Academy in Commerce City wants to build a permanent school but is waiting for school district approval.

Adams County School District 14 said it has some concerns about the charter school and is not ready to vote on the building of a new school. For the time being, the students are being taught in trailers.

The school was founded in 2005 and has grown to more than 400 students. One of the school's founders grew up in Commerce City and said she wanted a different educational choice for her children. In just two years, the school quickly ran out of room and is now forced to turn students away.

The classes are being taught in trailers, and there is no gymnasium and no proper cafeteria. The school plans to sell revenue bonds in order to pay for a permanent building, but the school needs approval from the school district before construction can begin.

"We need to break ground by October so that our children can have a permanent building by August of 2008," said Cindy Moran, parent and president of the school's PTMO.

Adams County School Distrct 14 said it's concerned the school isn't academically or operationally stable.

"Community Leadership Academy's CSAP scores have been the lowest in the district for two straight years," said school district spokeswoman Audra Conard.

The Board of Education is worried that if the school does not perform in accordance to state and federal education laws, the school would have to close. If the school was closed during construction, the district thinks it could become financially liable.

"The board of education is quite concerned about that and wants to review all the necessary information before moving forward to vote," said Conard.

Parents say the school shouldn't be judged on just two years' worth of scores.

"Until the kindergartners that founded this school are in the third grade and taking CSAP, then you can say, 'Yes, the curriculum of the charter is working.' Or, 'No, it's not,'" said Moran.
