Truckers transporting shipments of hazardous materials through central Denver before and during the Democratic National Convention will be required to use alternate routes unless they are making a pickup or delivery inside city limits, the Colorado State Patrol announced Tuesday.

That means any trucks transporting hazardous material on Interstate 25 will be routed around the city to other roads such as Interstate 76 and C470. The rerouting begins Saturday.

Trucks going southbound on I-25 will be routed to westbound I-76, westbound I-70 and southbound C470 around Denver.

Northbound I-25 hazardous materials trucks will be routed to northbound Interstate 225 to westbound I-70, and then to westbound Interstate 270.

Officers will be stopping trucks to ensure compliance and may cite noncompliant drivers.

The CSP also reminded drivers that I-25 from I-70 to Sixth Avenue will be shut down on the last night of the convention. For more travel information consult the Colorado Department of Transportation's web site or by calling 511.
