DNC Tip: Getting Around On RTD

DNC Traffic Survivor's Guide

With the predicted traffic congestion and the lack of parking downtown -- not to mention $4 gas -- daily commuters are being urged to use light rail or buses to get to work convention week. Expect to be packed more tightly than ever before, especially on the light rail.

One of the first public transportation options that visitors will see is the 16th Street Mall Shuttle. The 36 low-emission hybrid buses run along the 1.25-mile long pedestrian mall free of charge. Yes, I said free of charge. You just jump on and off as you please anywhere along the mall. The buses start running at 5:15 a.m. and end around 1:35 a.m.

As for the other public transportation options there are several different light rail lines that will take you where you need to go. The best place to see the different ways to get around is by visiting the RTD Web site.

For a quick reference, there are no turnstiles or places that you pay your light rail fare. Fare payment is based on the honor system. But beware: there are RTD security officers who do check for fare tickets. And you can bet there will be added security on the trains convention week.

Security will also be taking a close look at any large bags you may carry on the bus or train. Beware that they may search your stuff as well.

The fares are based on traveling through zones and the fare increases depending on how many zones you travel through. For most people who travel on the rail downtown or a little outside downtown, in one or two zones, the fare is $1.75. Travel in the more zones and the number of zones equal the price: three zones = $3 and four zones = $4. Discounts are available for seniors and students.

All the local bus fares cost $1.75.

QUICK TIPS:

  • Avoid bringing large bags if possible.
  • Plan on extra time for the ride into work.
  • Plan on extra crowded trains and buses.
  • Buy passes early to avoid confusion at the stations or on the rail.
