DNC Tip: Getting Around Protesters

DNC Traffic Survival Guide

On all four days of the convention the city is allowing protesters to march.

On the first three days, the protesters go from Civic Center Park downtown to the Pepsi Center. On the last day, they will march from Colfax Avenue to Invesco Field.

Mayor John Hickenlooper said, "Both the parade route and its hours of operation respect the desire of demonstrators to be seen and heard -- as well as the needs of downtown residents and commuters to get to and from work before and after the parades take place."

City officials underscore that downtown will be accessible and inconveniences to local residents, employees and businesses will be minimized.

The daily parades will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The parade staging area on the first three days will be at 10 a.m. on Bannock Street between 14th and Colfax (in front of the City and County Building). Since parking options are limited, those participating in the parades are encouraged to use RTD or other alternatives to get to the staging area.

The parades will kick off down the street at 11 a.m. from the north side of Colfax Avenue in the westbound lanes of traffic and proceed west toward Speer Boulevard, where marchers will then proceed north on the southbound lanes of Speer Boulevard to Larimer Street. The parade participants are then asked to use the Auraria campus to get to 7th Street and access Lot A.

The city plans on making sure there are plenty of signs along the route detailing the road closures and other restrictions. Eastbound Colfax and northbound Speer will remain open, but major slowdown can be expected.

On Thursday, the parade will go from Colfax and Mariposa west to Federal, then north to 20th Ave and into the Invesco Parking lots. Since Colfax will be closed at 9 a.m. traffic will already be routed around the parade.

The light rail line which crosses Speer Boulevard at Stout Street will remain open at all times, including the time allocated for parades. Additional security provided by RTD will supplement Denver police to ensure the safety of marchers when the light rail trains cross the parade route.

City crews will follow the last group of marchers so they can clean the streets on the parade route. Traffic barricades that were put up will be removed as well.

The city claims that since the parades will take place during non-rush hours, downtown business commuters and residents will have the opportunity to get to and from work with minimized inconvenience. Look at a map if you need to be on Colfax or Speer during lunch time to help reduce the risk that you will get caught in one of the traffic jams.

The public demonstration zone will be a 50,000 square foot area located in Lot A of the Pepsi Center parking area. It will be open to all members of the public, whether they choose to participate in any of the marches or not. Police say though that any and all activities within the public demonstration zone remain subject to local, state and federal laws.

This is the time that some residents and other pundits believe behaviors could get out of hand. There is an anarchist group that plans to disrupt the movement of the delegates to Pepsi Center every day of the convention. The city said downtown will be open so if you choose to go there, take along some common sense and just be a little more aware of your surroundings if things get out of hand.

There will be some additional screening procedures and security measures in some locations especially getting into buildings that have anything to do with the convention. This includes public transportation as well.

The city said that all downtown residents will be able to access their homes and parking garages and downtown businesses will be able to remain open with access for both their employees and customers.
