Bear Claws Through Tent, Cutting Woman

California Camper Gets 12 Stitches In Close Call

A woman needed 12 stitches to close a wound on her head after she was attacked by a bear early Monday morning at a campsite north of Frisco, officials said.

Wildlife officials said that the 41-year old California woman, who was not identified, was scratched in the forehead by a bear.

"She was sleeping by herself in her tent about 6 a.m. when she felt the muzzle of an animal nudging the side of her tent," said Frisco District Wildlife Manager Kirk Oldham.

"She pushed at the muzzle thinking it might be a loose dog, and the bear responded by swiping through the fabric with its claws, catching her on the forehead," Oldham said.

"She yelled and the bear backed off, then she climbed out of her tent at the opposite end from where the bear had been," he said. "She and the bear looked at each other from about 10 feet away and she had the composure to talk in a normal voice, telling the bear to go away. The animal left, and she walked down the trail to request help from people in a nearby trailer."

The bear left, but not for long. While the woman was getting medical treatment, the bear came back and ransacked her tent and effects. The woman kept a clean camp, but Oldham said a nearby camp was raided by a bear over the weekend.

Field officers said that they will set a culvert trap at the site to capture the bear. If it is captured, the animal will be killed according to Division of Wildlife policy.

Bears have injured five people in Colorado this summer, according to wildlife officials. In each case, officials said, the bears had become habituated to human food and regularly visited the sites looking for more.
