ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A 93-year-old woman who was found dead in her northern New Mexico home on Saturday died as the result of a bear attack, a medical examiner reported.
An autopsy showed that Adelia Maestas Trujillo died of multiple bite injuries from the bear attack, said Scott Wilson, associate director of investigations for the state Office of the Medical Investigations.
The medical examiner's office wouldn't provide information about how it determined the bear killed Trujillo.
"No more specifically than to say the examination showed evidence that she was alive at the time of the attack," said Wilson.
Asked how long Trujillo lived after the bear attack began, Scott said, "Of course that's always a difficult determination to make. But based on her injuries, the pathologists feel like she probably died very quickly."
The bear was tracked and killed about a half-mile from Trujillo's Cleveland, N.M., home after Trujillo was found dead by a neighbor.
The bear weighed about 250 pounds and was about 4 years old, state Game and Fish Department officials said.
