Woman Jailed For Having Messy Yard
Junk Must Be Removed From Front Of Home, Officials Say
A Longmont homeowner was sentenced to 20 days in jail because she would not clean up her yard, 7NEWS reported.
City officials said that homeowner Betty Rexroad has items like potted plants, shelves, and a wheelchair in her front yard that are considered junk and debris, and they must be removed.
Complaints from neighbors prompted authorities to issue a number of warnings to Rexroad to clean up her property. When she didn't comply, Rexroad was sentenced to one year of probation and again told to clean up the yard.
After Rexroad again did not remove the items, she was brought back into court, where she says that out of frustration, she told the judge to put her in jail.
Rexroad told 7NEWS on Monday that she was in the Boulder County jail "for being such a vicious and notorious criminal as the 'junk lady.'"
"Even though my yard has things in it that the 'city' doesn't like, they're all functional, they all have value, and they're mine," she said.
She admitted that she's had several chances to clean things up, but said that as a widow on a fixed income, she uses her collection to barter for the things that she needs.
Rexroad's next-door neighbor said that he's never gotten a ticket even though his yard is also a bit messy.
"I didn't want to come (to jail), and I couldn't satisfy the city to get them off my back," Rexroad said.
The judge told 7NEWS that the city would rather work with homeowners than lock them up, and she would reconsider Rexroad's sentence.
