Teen Murdered In Subway Shop Robbery
Case Not Connected With Columbine Robbery, Police Say
Colorado Springs police are searching for two gunmen in connection with the murder of a Subway sandwich shop employee.
It happened Thursday night about 10:00 p.m. as two Subway employees were closing the restaurant, located west of the downtown Colorado Springs area on 300 block of South 8th Street.
Police said that two male suspects entered the building and in the process of committing a robbery, shot a 17-year-old male employee in the chest, killing him.
El Paso County Coroner's Office determined Friday that Blaine Steele died as the result of a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Steele was a well-liked junior at Coronado High School, and had served on the student council and was on the wrestling team, authorities said.
A female employee was unharmed. She gave police a description of the two gunmen.
Police said that the first suspect was described as a white male, late teens or early twenties, 5'10" tall, 185 lbs., wearing baggy jeans, a two-tone color jacket, and a black stocking cap.
The second suspect was described as a Hispanic male, late teens or early twenties, 6' tall, 185 lbs., wearing a black ski mask, prescription glasses, black pants and a green T-shirt.
Investigators said that there is no reason at this time to believe that the robbery is connected to a Subway shooting in Jefferson County last year where two Columbine high school students were found murdered on Valentine's Day. That case has never been solved.
