Columbine Task Force - Library Team - Part 1

ADMINISTRATIVE SUMMARY

Team V was assigned the responsibility of investigating the events, which transpired in the Columbine High School library on April 20, 1999. In order to accomplish that task, Team V was required to conduct detailed interviews with surviving victims and witnesses. In conjunction with the victim/witness interviews, Team V utilized the 911 tape, physical evidence collected at the scene, ballistic reports, medical reports and autopsy reports to determine the sequence of events as they occurred in the library. In addition, Team V consulted with the Jefferson County Coroner and various pathologists to assist in determining the suspects' actions while in the library.

Team V was comprised of six investigators from various agencies. The investigators are identified as Detective R. Boatright, Arvada Police Department (team leader), Detective Diane Obbema, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Special Agent John Elvig, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Investigator Jim Burkhalter, Jefferson County District Attorney's Office, Investigator Mike Gallagher, Jefferson County District Attorney's Office and Detective Brice Moomaw, Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office. Detectives Boatright and Obbema along with Special Agent Elvig conducted all interviews with surviving library victims and witnesses. Team V determined there were a total of 56 people present in the library at the time the suspects entered. Of the 56 people present, four were faculty/staff (all female), while the remaining 52 individuals were students. In terms of the 52 students, 24 were male, while 28 were female. Students were of various grades and ranged in age from 15 to 18.

Based on the totality of the investigation, only two suspects were identified as being responsible for injuring or killing those present in the library. The two suspects were identified as Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. There were no discrepancies regarding that issue. In respect to those present in the library, 14 received injuries of varying degrees while 10 were murdered. The injured were identified as follows:

  1. Brian Anderson (treated and released) -- shot by Harris (actually injured by west doors prior to entering the library).
  2. Jennifer Doyle (hospitalized) -- shot by Klebold.
  3. Steven Eubanks (treated and released) -- shot by Harris.
  4. Makai Hall (hospitalized) -- shot by Klebold.
  5. Patrick Ireland (hospitalized) -- shot by Klebold.
  6. Mark Kintgen (hospitalized) -- shot by Klebold.
  7. Lisa Kreutz (hospitalized) -- shot by both Klebold and Harris.
  8. Patricia Nielsen (treated and released) -- shot by Harris (actually injured by west doors prior to entering the library).
  9. Nicole Nowlen (hospitalized) -- shot by Harris.
  10. Kacey Reugsegger (hospitalized) -- shot by Harris.
  11. Jeanna Park (hospitalized) -- shot by Harris.
  12. Valeen Schnurr (hospitalized) -- shot by Klebold.
  13. Danny Steepleton (hospitalized) -- shot by Klebold.
  14. Evan Todd (hospitalized) -- shot by Harris.

To summarize the above information, Eric Harris was responsible for injuring seven people by himself, while Dylan Klebold injured six people. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris were both responsible for injuring one of the individuals.

The deceased were identified as follows:

  1. Cassie Bernall -- shot by Harris.
  2. Steven Curnow -- shot by Harris.
  3. Corey DePooter -- shot by Klebold and Harris.
  4. Kelly Fleming -- shot by Harris.
  5. Matthew Kechter -- shot by Klebold.
  6. Daniel Mauser -- shot by Harris.
  7. Isaiah Shoels -- shot by Harris.
  8. John Tomlin -- shot by both Klebold and Harris.
  9. Lauren Townsend -- shot by both Klebold and Harris.
  10. Kyle Velasquez -- shot by Klebold.

In summary, Eric Harris was responsible for killing five students, while Dylan Klebold killed two. Together, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed an additional three students.
