No School On Columbine Anniversary
District Looks For Ways To Mark Second Anniversary
No Jefferson County students will be in class on this year's anniversary of the Columbine shooting.
The Jefferson County Public School System has scheduled an "in service" day for teachers on April 20, which means that students will not be attending class.
The second anniversary of the Columbine shooting will be low-key this year, according to school officials.
They had wanted to hold a formal ceremony to mark the second anniversary of the tragedy.
Originally, district officials planned for a memorial event at the Clement Park Amphitheater, next to the school. The ceremony would have consisted of a reading of the victims' names in time with the tolling of a bell and the possible dedication of a permanent memorial.
But the families of the Columbine victims indicated that they didn't want any observance of the anniversary this year.
The district will meet Monday with members of the religious community and the Foothills Park and Recreation District to discuss other options.
Melody Smith, a spokeswoman for the victims' families, said that the families may gather at a private ceremony at an undisclosed location. "It's just time for some peace," she said. "They just decided this year that they want to be left alone."
