Fountain Gulch Fire Expands Near Idaho Springs

More Crews Called In To Battle Blaze

POSTED: 3:06 p.m. MDT July 1, 2002

The Fountain Gulch Fire near Idaho Springs was estimated at 185 acres Monday, but officials said that no homes or structures are threatened by the blaze.

GPS location of Fountain Gulch Fire

The fire was burning a mile northeast of Idaho Springs (map, left) in a rugged, hilly area. Smoke and flames from the fire were visable from Interstate 70 from as far east as Genesee.

"The biggest problem we're having is traffic -- everybody wants to stop and take a look, so we've got State Patrol helping us keep the traffic (on I-70) moving," said Don Krueger, Clear Creek County Sheriff.

Three 20-person Type II firefighting teams were called in to battle the blaze, aided by "heavy air suppression efforts," according to an information recording made by the Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office.

Two air tankers and a helicopter were fighting the blaze on the north side, which was less accessible by ground crews.

The fire was zero percent contained Monday afternoon.

Residents wanting additional updates have been asked to call (303) 679-2300, ext. 573 for information.
