March 16: 2001: Telemarketing

The letters and e-mails continue on ways people deal with pesky telemarketers.

Most recently, Geraldine Walker of Sidney, Neb. writes: When telemarketers call, I turn up the radio and keep turning it up. One call interrupted the last minutes of a very close ball game. I'm not going to let that happen again.

Good point, but if you turn up the volume too loud you could damage your own hearing first. My suggestion is to say, "Excuse me, I was watching TV and can't miss what's happening. You keep talking and I'll keep watching. If that doesn't work, don't call this number ever again."

By the way, what's happened up at the State Capitol with the telemarketing legislation? This was the measure that would create a master list of people who don't want to be bothered by those callers.

Senator Ken Chlouber tells us it is just about ready for a full vote in the Senate and he expects approval there.

Chlouber says that he expects "a buzz saw or two in the House of Representatives."
