Obsolete Alcohol References Targeted By Referendum N

Supporters Believe Provisions No Longer Needed; Opponents Say They're Historical

Referendum N on the Colorado ballot would remove two sections of the Colorado Constitution related to the regulation of alcohol and beverages.

“What's in the constitution now kind of defines what intoxicating liquor is, how you sell intoxicating liquor, when it could be sold," Assistant House Majority Leader Terrance Carroll told 7News.

Carroll says that language is not needed in the constitution.

“The issues dealt with in those constitution provisions are all dealt with at county level, city level or liquor codes. So it's redundant to have in the constitution," said Carroll.

According to the League of Women Voters of Colorado, opponents of Referendum N say, “All provisions in the Colorado Constitution have historical value. Removing them may diminish the historical character of the constitution and make future research of the constitution more difficult.”

But opponents point out that Colorado just passed a law allowing liquor stores to stay open on Sundays.

“Because we do things like that in statute, it doesn’t need to be in the constitution at this point,” said Carroll.
